Assessment - Exams

Examinations in off campus units

When do examinations take place?

Examinations for off-campus units are normally held during the examination period each semester. A few units are assessed by an examination in week 8 (see your unit Plan for details).
Students must sit their examinations at the scheduled date and time.

Where do examinations take place?

You will sit your examination at one of ECU’s examination centres or with an appropriate supervisor depending on where you live. We will automatically register you at your nearest ECU exam centre, or if you live too far away from a centre you can nominate a supervisor.

You are not responsible for paying your approved examination supervision.

ECU Examination Centres

If you live within 80 km of one of Edith Cowan University's official Examination Centres, you must sit your examinations there. Confirmation of your exam venue will be emailed to your student email address about three weeks before the exam fortnight. Your confirmation email will advise you of the centre's attendance address and contact details, and any special requirements of the exam centre (for example, you may need to confirm your attendance in advance, or the examination might commence at a different time). You must confirm your examination attendance if required to do so by the examination centre.

Availability of centres may vary due to reasons outside our control. Should a centre not be available, you will be contacted about an alternative venue.

Student-selected examination supervisor

If there is not a centre within 80 km of where you live, you are responsible for organising an appropriate supervisor for your exams. You must complete an Application for Student Selected Supervisor form and return it to Assessments as soon as possible. An exam supervisor should:

  • be an English-speaking person
  • not be related to you
  • not be an Edith Cowan University student
  • have academic or legal standing in the community, for example:
    • a primary or secondary school teacher, TAFE or university lecturer or tertiary education employee
    • a legal practitioner, Justice of the Peace, government representative, military officer or police officer
    • a training or education officer at your place of employment, a WA Telecentre staff member

If you need to verify that a particular person is suitable to supervise your examinations, please contact Assessments.
Your supervisor must confirm that they are available to supervise you at the scheduled examination date and time. Your supervisor may be contacted by Assessments to ensure that he or she is an appropriate person to supervise you.

It is your responsibility to inform your supervisor of the date and time of the examination at the earliest opportunity and to confirm that examination materials have been received by your supervisor prior to the scheduled date of examination.

Do you study overseas but don't have an ECU exam centre near you?

The British Council has a large number of offices located worldwide. If you are overseas and do not live near an ECU examination centre, please refer to http://www.britishcouncil.org/home-contact-worldwide for the location of your nearest British Council office. British Council offices are often happy to supervise exams and may be able to assist you.

Examination information and assistance

If you have any questions regarding examination preparation or the nature and duration of the exam please check your unit Plan or contact your tutor. Sometimes lecturers post important exam information on electronic discussion forums toward the end of the semester.

Learning Advisors can also provide assistance with examination preparation techniques.

You may request copies of previous examination papers (if available) from External Library Services. Many past exam papers are also available online. You need to search the ECU catalogue by Title, enter the unit code and then click on Submit Search. A list of available exam papers for the unit will be displayed, and you will be asked to enter your name and student number to access them.

Identification requirements at examinations

You will be sent a confirmation notice indicating the date, time and venue of your examination. Take this confirmation notice to the examination along with photographic identification (e.g. driver’s licence, student ID card or passport). Contact Assessments if you have difficulty producing photographic identification.
