What issues can I raise with a counsellor?

You can raise ANY personal or psychological issue with us that concerns you.

You might be feeling down, anxious, depressed, lonely or lacking in confidence. You might be experiencing difficulties in your relationships and don't know how to solve them. Or you may be having problems with alcohol, drugs, food, body appearance or sexuality which could be worrying you.

You may find it really hard adjusting to uni, staying motivated or dealing with the pressure of doing tutorial presentations or exams.

You may be suffering severe anxiety, depression or other major mental health problems.

We encourage you to come and see us before a problem becomes a major issue.

I've never been to a counsellor before! How does it work?

Well, when you attend your first meeting with a counsellor, we usually start the interview by welcoming you and asking you what brought you to us. Most people feel a bit tense or uncomfortable in talking to a "stranger" about very personal matters. That's ok - counsellors are used to it! Counsellors understand it's not easy to open up to somebody you don't know. But you might find that any uncomfortable feeling will fade away as soon as you get started. The counsellor will be fully focused on you and your "story".

You might also begin to feel relieved when you start to share your worries and concerns with somebody who is interested in your well being. All our counsellors were once uni students themselves and are trained to support your personal and academic development.
