Metadata
Metadata is used by search engines to locate web pages with relevant terms to those searched on by users. Our web pages will be found by search engines if we have good keywords and descriptions.
Managing metadata in the WebCMS
You will need to include your metadata when you create a web page in the WebCMS before it is approved to go live.
- In the WebCMS, right click on your page or news item asset and select ‘Metadata’. Select ‘Acquire locks’
- Scroll down to ‘AGLS Mandatory and Optional’ headings
- Insert text into the ‘Description’ and ‘Keywords’ fields by un-checking the ‘use default’ box
Meta description
- A meta description is a sentence that summarises the content of the web page
- The description will appear in the results that are returned in a search engine
- Include main words from the title and ECU
- Maximum of 160 characters
- E.g. Find out what benefits you receive by being part of our ECU Alumni community

- Separate words with a comma and space
- Maximum of 15 words
- In this order: {primary word}, {secondary word}, {ecu}, {edith cowan university}
