Downloads
Downloadable documents must:
- Be in corporate style.
- Be in PDF format (particularly for the public internet website).
- Microsoft Word and Excel documents are rarely accepted on the public website but are okay on the intranet only if a person needs to edit the document
- Open in the same web browser window.
Using the 'Downloads' box
The optional web page element of the 'Downloads' box is to include related downloadable documents to your web page. It is preferable for you to use the 'Downloads' box rather than linking to a document within content on a web page.
- Refer to the document in your content but only include the link in the 'Downloads' box.
- Aim to keep the 'Downloads' box to a maximum of five links.
- Do not include codes or file types (this will be added automatically by the ECU WebCMS)
Adding a download within content
If you’ve decided to add your downloads in content, you must:
- Have the title of the document linked (see naming a download).
- Have the file size displayed (correctly) directly following the link, but not included as the link.
- E.g. Complete the Find a Friend request form (pdf 12kb) and send it to our Alumni team.
If you require a list of downloads in content, you can request this from the Web Business Team.
Naming a download - Titles
Please follow these naming conventions for all download and linked image titles. Titles are what will display on the web page and should not be the same as the file name.
- Structure: {Sector, if required} {Study area or Discipline} - {item}: {clarifier, if required}
- E.g. Postgraduate Prospectus
- E.g. Undergraduate Business brochure
- E.g. Library rules
- E.g. Dance – Audition dates
- Apply the same rules as headings and page titles; use sentence case.
- The name of the document should be intuitive to its contents.
- Aim to keep the length of names short and direct (aim for a maximum of five words).
- Do not use underscores.
- Do not include the word ECU, unless it is part of the official title.
- Do not use acronyms or abbreviations.
- Do not use non-standard characters, i.e. (@) (#) ($) (?) (<)
- Dates are only appropriate to use in temporal documents, like Newsletters or minutes: i.e. Alumination 2010
- Do not use names like: ECU-PG-Directions.pdf OR ECU-Scholarships.pdf – these are file names.
Naming a download – File names
File names are what the document is saved as and will display in the web address bar when it is downloaded. These file names should be named appropriately, for example:
- Structure: {ECU or endorsed brand}-{Study area or Discipline}-{item name}-{clarifier, if required}.{file type}
- E.g. Engaging Minds, Engaging Communities brochure
- E.g. Engagement Functional Plan 2011 - 2013
