Inclusive language makes sure that we don’t leave people out of our conversations. It indicates to everyone from diverse backgrounds and communities that they are acknowledged and celebrated for their individuality, and for the contributions they make to wider society.

We are proud to launch our Inclusive Language Guide, our tool to guide the ECU community to make sure that working and studying at ECU is an inclusive and positive experience for everyone.

The Inclusive Language Guide covers our guiding principles – including using a person-centred approach, empowering people to self-advocate and learning from mistakes, examples of good inclusive language practice and further resources.

We recognise that language is always evolving, so this guide is a living document and will continue to be updated. Please feel free to email equity@ecu.edu.au with any suggestions.
