ECU is increasing the number of women in the research workforce.
ECU continues to advance gender equality in the research domain, as a new report shows positive signs for ECU in the percentage of women in the workforce, as reflected in the research workforce across Australian universities.
The latest report Gender and the Research Workforce: Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2018 was prepared by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and was released to institutions on 10 October 2019. Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) is facilitated by the ARC and evaluates the quality of publicly funded research undertaken in Australian universities. The ARC report examines gender data, and research workforce data more broadly, primarily from ERA-2018, but included some data from the other three ERA rounds (2010, 2012, 2015) as gender data has only been reported since ERA-2015.
A comparison of ECU’s ERA-2018 staffing data against the Gender and the Research Workforce Report has revealed that ECU performed above the national average, in terms of the female proportion of the University’s researchers, for many of the Fields of Research (FoR). ECU had its highest percentage female headcount and FTE in Education (FoR 13), followed by Medical and Health Sciences (FoR 11), Language, Communication and Culture (FoR 20) and Studies in Human Society (FoR 16).
Across all Fields of Research in ERA-2018, the proportion of ECU’s female researchers in terms of total headcount was 52.1% relative to the national average of 43.6%, and the University’s total female FTE was 51.0% compared with the national average of 44.1%.
Professor Caroline Finch AO, ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) said “ECU has performed well across many FoR codes, however, we are still looking to increase female headcount in STEM areas such as Technology, Engineering, Physical Sciences and Information and Computer Sciences.”
