ECU has received an ‘excellent’ rating from the NHMRC
A recent evaluation of ECU’s gender equality policy and processes as they relate to research by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), illustrates how ECU is committed to promoting gender equality in the health and medical research sector.
In 2019, ECU participated in the 2018-19 review of gender equality policy requirements for Administering Institutions as NHMRC requires Administering Institutions to have policies in place to support gender equality in health and medical research. This review focused on the seven gender equality requirements that were set out in the 2015 NHMRC Administering Institution Policy as well as the specific elements required to meet the assessment criteria.
This review has now been completed and ECU was assessed as meeting all seven gender equality requirements, through either fully adopting or partly adopting/working towards each requirement. This results in ECU receiving an overall category rating of ‘excellent.
During this process, NHMRC also took into account ECU’s other gender equality achievements, including recognition as holding the WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality (EOCGE) citation and the University’s SAGE Athena SWAN Bronze Institutional Award achieved in 2018.
NHMRC’s Gender Equality Strategy 2018-2021 aims to achieve a gender-equal health and medical research workforce by supporting an increase in the retention and progression of women. Its vision is that all researchers have equal opportunity to participate in NHMRC funding schemes and are supported to reach their full potential.
