ECU is a signatory of a joint sector position statement on ‘Preserving Gender Equity as a Higher Education Priority During and After COVID-19’.
Edith Cowan University (ECU) is among the first universities in Australia, to become a signatory of a joint sector position statement on ‘Preserving Gender Equity as a Higher Education Priority During and After COVID-19’.
Professor Steve Chapman, ECU’s Vice-Chancellor, has endorsed the University as a signatory to the 'Preserving Gender Equity as a Higher Education Priority During and After COVID-19’ Joint Sector Position Statement, outlining five key actions aimed at preserving gender equity as a priority during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Action will be taken by institutions looking to mitigate the potential negative effects of COVID-19 on gender equality in the higher education and research sectors.
ECU joins a number of universities and sector partners, including the Australian Academy of Science, Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Ltd., and Equity Practitioners in Higher Education Australasia (EPHEA) in signing the position statement.
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented significant challenges for gender equity across the higher education and research sectors. A recent report produced by Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel AO and the Rapid Research Information Forum, found that early evidence indicates that women will be disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and women particularly in the science, technology, engineering, maths (STEM) workforce.
