Tuesday 23 July saw internationally-renowned speaker, author, mentor and proud ECU alumna Cathy Burke join us for the last event in the ‘Body, Mind and Soul’ alumni event series. For 20 years, Cathy was the CEO of The Hunger Project Australia, and then Global Vice-President, working to end hunger across South Asia and Africa. She was an integral member of a visionary team who developed leadership at scale in villages all over the world. Through her work, millions of the world’s poorest people stepped into their leadership, and were able to feed themselves and their families.
The ‘Soul’ component of this event series allowed Cathy to share with the alumni community her insights on how claiming our essential humanity is the surprising key to solving complex global problems, and living a life of dignity and meaning. Through personal stories and anecdotes about the inspirational women she has met through her work with The Hunger Project, Cathy helped us to explore how we can heal the world in whatever context is relevant to us; for work culture, family dynamic and personal change.
Cathy ended the evening by allowing all attendees to ‘fill their souls’ by sharing a hug with all who would like – the queue reached all around the room!
Cathy’s book, Unlikely Leaders: Lessons in Leadership from the Village Classroom is available to buy online.
