Originally from Scotland, Mr Laverty grew up in Western Australia living near Mount Lawley Campus, he now resides at Castlemaine in Victoria, but returns frequently to WA (well, at least, before COVID-19).

ECU is home to some of his fondest memories and he met his wife Ms Anna Laverty (née Webster) at WAAPA. He says, "In hindsight my HECS debt was good value - I got a degree and also got hitched."

Continued from Alumni News...

What made you choose ECU and your particular course of study?
I wanted to be a journalist. ECU had a strong media department and that was a big pull. It also had a student paper, Harmbee, which I was lucky enough to become the Music Editor. This meant lots of free records, free gig passes, plus I got to interview and review a ton of bands, local national, and a few international. It was a great grounding.

Career wise, what have you done since leaving ECU?
I’ve been a journalist, press officer, high school teacher, author, radio presenter and done 101 random jobs in between. At the moment I host the book show, The Quiet Carriage, on 94.9 Main FM - also available on Spotify. I’ve written three books, the most recent of which is the novella Man Overbored, available wherever books are sold.

What's your biggest achievement to date - personal or professional?
Having two kids - it’s a cliché but it puts everything into perspective.

Where's your favourite place in the world?
I went to Mexico a few years back. I’d move there in a heartbeat.

Who inspires you?
Everyone you meet is inspiring in their own little way if you dig deep enough. Other people’s stories are what makes my world go round.

If you could go back to when you graduated from university, what advice would you give yourself?
Work hard, eat your greens and be good to your mother. Everything else will take care of itself.

What's the secret to telling a good story?
There are so many elements to a good story. I believe one that often gets overlooked is courage. Because everyone else can write the stories that everyone else writes but only you can write the stories that are uniquely and truly yours. And it takes courage to do that.

The Quiet Carriage airs on 94.9 Main FM and across Australia on the Community Radio Network.
