The 28 November 2011 marked the 60th anniversary of Edith Cowan University’s first Aboriginal graduate, who was also the first qualified Aboriginal teacher in Western Australia.
A special sundowner event celebrated this occasion, including the unveiling of the foundation tribute to recognise ECU’s then 501 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Alumni between the years of 1951-2010. This anniversary event has become the flagship annual celebration to attract Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Alumni back to ECU to re-connect and network. Where possible, this event has been held on or as close to the anniversary date.
Adding names to the tribute
A special feature of this event happens every two years where the latest cohort of graduate names get added to the tribute. 2015 saw an additional 42 graduates from 2013-2014 cohort added to the tribute - bringing the current total to 576 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates. The 2015-2016 cohort will be added at the 2017 event.
