eResearch describes a set of activities that uses the power of advanced information and communication technologies (ICTs) for research. Those activities are diverse, multi-disciplinary and characterised by collaboration.

eResearch has the ability to change the way research is carried out; increasing efficiency, research outputs and activity by developing interactivity between researchers and advanced ICTs.

Core areas

There are four core areas of eResearch at ECU:

  • Data management and sharing: the ability to store, find and make data available for re-use in an effective and controlled way.
  • High-performance computing: the ability to use high performance computational power and memory to analyse and model large and /or complex datasets in a timely manner.
  • Research collaboration: the ability to facilitate inter-disciplinary, inter-institutional and international research collaboration, assisted by digital technologies.
  • Visualisation: the ability to identify, detect, understand complex patterns and datasets in a new way, and present theoretical concepts in novel and engaging ways.

Fostering eResearch

Research Services and the eResearch team is fostering eResearch activities across ECU, in collaboration with Pawsey Supercomputing Centre and related external groups, and internal groups such as the Information Technology Service Centre (ITSC) and the Library.

We aim to:

  • promote and support eResearch initiatives across ECU;
  • develop and support collaborative funding opportunities;
  • encourage and develop collaboration and interdisciplinary working;
  • increase the effective use of resources and infrastructure by working collaboratively;
  • increase the knowledge base of all stakeholders;
  • assist ECU researchers to effectively access national infrastructure, tools and facilities;
  • provide research data management governance and advice; and
  • facilitate sharing at all levels.
