Information for supervisors

Role of an IpAC Program Clinical Supervisor

An IpAC Program Clinical Supervisor not only provides training, supervision and facilitation in the clinical skills of the students on placement, but also stimulates interprofessional learning by facilitating discussion and reflection.

The role has multiple facets including:

  • ensuring the quality of care for clients by supporting and guiding students;
  • assessing students’ clinical capabilities. Clinical supervisors are provided with the necessary documentation, such as relevant learning outcomes and unit outlines for each discipline;
  • stimulating interprofessional learning by facilitating discussion and reflection. An IPL support sheet has been developed to support this facet of the role and professional development in the area of IPL is available to supervisors;
  • promoting self-management of chronic disease; and
  • role modeling interprofessional practice.

To support the clinical supervisors, the IpAC Program:

  • provides tools to aid interprofessional education;
  • provides training in interprofessional education;
  • enables clinical supervisors to maintain contact with relevant unit coordinators; and
  • provides ongoing professional development sessions
