Delegates from The Republic of Gambia toured Edith Cowan University’s (ECU’s) state-of-the-art health, engineering and ICT facilities during a visit to the Joondalup Campus this week.

The delegation, including Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Hon. Mr Mamadou Tangara, visited the Health Simulation Centre and Health and Wellness Clinic, and also got a glimpse of the new engineering building set to open next year.

The Simulation Centre, which opened in 2008, uses trained actors and volunteers to play the roles of patients, relatives, healthcare professionals and visitors to simulate some of the real-life situations that arise when working in the healthcare profession.

It provides valuable hands-on practice for students and the healthcare workers to learn and master skills needed in a variety of simulated healthcare settings.

The delegation also visited the Health and Wellness Clinic, where they saw patients utilising the clinic’s exercise facilities, used for a range of research initiatives including the Cancer Survivor Program and Diabetes Wellness Program.

The group then toured the new engineering building, set to open in 2012, which will house ECU’s purpose-built engineering and ICT technologies.

ECU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kerry Cox, said the visit was a great opportunity to showcase the University’s facilities to our international counterparts.

“It was pleasing to see the delegates express such an interest in the University’s work in the areas of health, ICT and engineering,” said Professor Cox.

“The University works tirelessly to develop education programs that benefit the communities we serve, and it was a great honour to welcome these delegates as we showcased our innovative teaching and learning approaches in the areas of health, engineering and ICT.”

Mr Tangara found the visit was both interesting and engaging.

“It was a pleasure to visit ECU’s state-of-the-art facilities, and we hope to work closely with the University in the future to develop mutually beneficial programs between our two countries,” he said.

The Gambian delegation was visiting Perth for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which took place over the weekend.

In addition to Mr Tangara, delegates included Minister for Trade, Regional Interaction and Employment, The Hon. Mr Abdou Kolley; Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service, The Hon. Mr Ousman Jammeh; Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Mawdo Juwara; and Deputy Permanent Secretary Mrs Amie Nyan-Alaboson.
