Boomerang@ECU is the International Advertising Association's inaugural Australian student chapter, with student members drawn from advertising and public relations courses in the School of Communications and Arts. It is also a partnership that fosters links between marketing students and advertising and marketing businesses, with the goal of offering students networking opportunities and building their industry knowledge.
The group is a professionally attuned, business-focused chapter for outstanding academic achievers. It has active relationships with other professional associations, such as Public Relations Institute of Australia Student Chapter and the Youngblood's group of the Advertising Federation of Australia. Boomerang's functions and activities help link students with the industry.
The goals of Boomerang are:
Boomerang draws on personal and professional contacts of its co-ordinator, who uses her contacts to connect students to industry, organising work experience and professional placements and inviting them to attend advertising functions where they can network with influential business professionals. Work undertaken by members provides excellent learning experiences for students, which have helped a number of members progress into workforce.
Students that Boomerang have introduced to industry are employed by a wide range of employer groups, including Exhibit Group, Channel Seven, Macquarie Regional Radio, Media Decisions, Arnoul Media, Brand Connect, Marketforce, Eye Corp, Bell Booth, Workhouse and Sony BMG.
Boomerang has also enabled ECU to enter student teams in IAA competitions, including the national 2006 IAA Big Idea Competition, where it placed second out of 18 Australian teams, the 2007 IAA United Nations World Student Challenge, in which the ECU team won the competition.
