Tourism field trips and student engagement

Professor Ross Dowling OAM operates a program designed to engage students in tourism with members of the industry, exposing them to issues that are relevant and pressing in Western Australian and elsewhere. This enhances the learning opportunities through interaction with practitioners.

The series of events has expanded the learning for students while also providing a valuable service and feedback to communities looking to develop their tourism opportunities.

The field trips and community interaction foster the University's mission to develop valued citizens for the benefit of Western Australia and beyond, through teaching and research inspired by engagement and partnerships.

In recent years, the program of field trips and partnerships has included:

  • field trips to Shark Bay
  • field trips to Malaysian Borneo, which provided students with first-hand experience of international business operations
  • student involvement with the strategic direction of tourism in Mount Magnet, and
  • student involvement in a Global Geotourism Conference.

For 2011, the program is expected to incorporate voluntary work visiting Borneo that will assist in local tourism development.
