This partnership between ECU and Kingston Primary is the first project of its kind in Western Australia. It is an opportunity for ten education students in their final year of study to become interns while studying.
The students are able to work and learn at the same time in a workplace setting, in an effort to better develop pre-service teaching skills. This project allows the students to become the teachers, and to be paid for their hands-on learning experience.
Interns in the program not only become working members of the school, but also are registered with the WA Department of Education, with guaranteed employment in a public school after the internship is successfully completed.
Kingston Primary School chooses senior teachers to supervise the interns throughout the project and ECU selects lecturers to support them through the experience.
The success of the project has led to a similar partnership between ECU South West and a primary school in Dalyellup (with slightly different arrangements relating to eventual employment) and has shown benefits for both the university students and the school partners in delivering excellent educational outcomes.
