Nurse staffing research project

The School of Nursing Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine has a long association with the WA Health Department's Nursing and Midwifery Office. In the dynamic health care world, evaluating and examining nursing and midwifery workforce reform is essential.
Safe, affordable and sustainable staffing is a major goal of the Nursing and Midwifery Once and the nursing and midwifery professions.

ECU's School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine has partnered with the Department of Health WA to undertake research that will allow the office to develop state-wide workforce plans. The gaps and shortfalls identified in the plans will serve as the basis for a range of specific initiatives that are evidence-based and contemporary in practice.

The Midwifery Workforce Plan seeks to establish a baseline midwifery workforce. It then will implement and evaluate different staffing models in maternity care areas, evaluate roles, and establish the benefits that new support workers (such as maternity care assistants) have on efficiency, client safety, patent satisfaction and workforce planning.

The second project aims to establish baseline nurse sensitive outcomes that monitor patent safety, implement different staffing models in the acute care areas, and evaluate those models. It will also look at the roles and benefits of new support workers.
