Critical Horizons Regional Futures Series

The Critical Horizons Regional Futures Series is an ongoing program of conferences and seminars that look at emerging global trends and consider their potential impact on regional communities in the South West. The series of events offers an opportunity for the regional community to engage with experts and debate issues that could affect their future.

In October 2010, ECU South West hosted a Critical Horizons seminar on the issue of mental health, which included presentations by 2010 Australian of the Year Professor Patrick McGorry and the 2010 WA Australian of the Year, ECU's Foundation Chair of Ageing and Alzheimer's disease Professor Ralph Martins.

The seminar was attended by 200 people from across the region, bringing together experts within the health sector as well as members of the public and government policy decision-makers. ECU South West also hosted the three-day 2010 conference for Critical Horizons, which brought together leading academics, community leaders, thinkers and experts to discuss the future of the South West Region.

The benefits of the series are diverse, including fostering a sense of location and community in the South West, providing expertise to address pressing local and regional issues, opening the University campus up to key South West stakeholders and linking these with community members, and the ongoing promotion of ECU South West within the region.
