Extra curricular initiatives to engage school children in science

ECU is operating two initiatives to engage primary and secondary school children in science: The ECU Science Experience and the Peer Tutoring Program (known as StepUp!)

The ECU Science Experience is an annual event held at university campuses across Australia.

Each year between 50 and 80 high school students about to enter Year 10 spend three days at ECU's Joondalup Campus participating in science activities run by ECU staff and students.

The program aims to encourage teenagers to enjoy and pursue science and technology.

The ECU Peer Tutoring program, known as StepUp!, provides a valuable community service program in classroom peer tutoring by university students to assist teachers and students at schools in proximity to the Joondalup and Mt Lawley campuses of ECU.

This program currently places 20-30 participating students per year.

This is a free service to schools and is supported financially by ECU’s Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science. Since its inception in 1997 more than 400 students have participated in this program. ECU students participating in this community service program commit themselves to assist school teachers in the classroom for regular weekly sessions throughout the school year (one term minimum).

Students assist teachers with many activities within the classroom and interact with the students, increasing their own communication skills and confidence as well as sharing insights about university life and studies.

This is beneficial and relevant to school students as they consider their own future educational directions.
