Why study at ECU?

About this Major

The Photomedia major encourages critical and creative thinking in the application of image production pertinent to contemporary photographic practice.

Students investigate historical and analytical perspectives in photography and explore original visual strategies and aesthetic values to communicate their ideas. Studying photographic language, technologies and techniques prepares students for a diverse range of current practices employing photomedia including contemporary art, advertising, fashion, illustration, editorial, photojournalism and videography. Knowledge acquired in seminars, workshops and assignment production and exhibition is suited to a variety of contexts and applications empowering students to create work related to their own personal and professional aspirations.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Think critically to analyse, interpret and conceptualise/synthesise complex Photomedia knowledge/problems.
  2. Think creatively to anticipate challenges and generate Photomedia solutions/responses.
  3. Use digital technologies and Photomedia related literacy to access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from multiple sources.
  4. Communicate Photomedia knowledge and ideas clearly, coherently and with independence.
  5. Demonstrate a global outlook with respect for cultural diversity, including Indigenous cultural competence.
  6. Work collaboratively and demonstrate initiative to implement social, sustainable, and ethical values through appropriate practice in Photomedia projects.
  7. Demonstrate autonomy, accountability and judgement for own learning and scholarship and/or professional practice.
  8. Apply broad discipline knowledge to a range of theoretical and technical/practical Photomedia situations.
