About this Major

Go beyond the numbers and take theory into the real world as you develop your understanding in the core areas of applied mathematics, including calculus, statistics, mathematical modelling and linear algebra.

This major will give you the necessary background to do higher studies in areas of applied mathematics and statistics and to engage with multidisciplinary teams to solve problems in diverse contexts such as economics, health, engineering, and science.

Special entry requirements

All applicants are required to have passed ATAR Mathematics Methods, ATAR Mathematics Specialist or MAT1137 Introductory Applied Mathematics, with equivalents considered.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply broad discipline knowledge to a range of theoretical and practical mathematical situations.
  2. Analyse theoretical models and data using a range of mathematical and statistical approaches.
  3. Draw conclusions from mathematical models to generate solutions to mathematical problems.
  4. Use mathematical software packages to investigate and solve problems in mathematical and statistical contexts.
  5. Communicate mathematical knowledge and ideas clearly, coherently and with independence.
