Humanities and Social Sciences Education Specialisation
Designed for students wishing to become Humanities and Social Science teachers in secondary schools.
Humanities and Social Science teachers must be knowledgeable in a wide range of areas including history, geography, economics and civics. The specialisation content is closely aligned to the requirements of the Australian Curriculum and to WACE syllabus and examination requirements. The units cover school curricula, teaching strategies and the development and assessment of teaching programmes.
Special entry requirements
All applicants are required to have completed a major in one of the specialist humanities areas: Economics/Business, Geography, History or Politics/Law (three years of degree level study comprising at least 6 units with no more than two at first-year level and no fewer than two units at third-year level) together with a part in another area of study: Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Environmental studies, Geography, History, Indigenous Studies, Legal Studies, Politics, Economics, with equivalents considered. Alternatively applicants can complete at least two years (4 units) of degree level studies in a combination of Economics, History or Geography with two units at level 2 or above, if they intend to undertake this specialisation as their minor area of study.

- Communicate theoretical concepts and complex knowledge of both students and their learning to a variety of audiences including students, parents/caregivers, colleagues and the wider community. (6,7,Q,U,ee,ll,mm)
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of appropriate Social Science curricula, content, learning and teaching sequences or strategies at secondary level, to design and organise content and lesson plans. (1,G,H,I,J,K,N,P,Q)
- Demonstrate specialised technical, trans literacy and creative skills in developing learning and teaching strategies for secondary students in Social Science. (5,11,14,M,Q)
- Generate and evaluate a variety of Social Science assessment strategies using a range of resources, including information and communications technology. (4,11,14,N,R,bb)
- Independently and collaboratively plan, implement and evaluate innovative teaching and learning strategies in complex settings. (9,12,14,P,Q,T,dd)
