Mansplaining, microagressions and manalogues were just a few examples, ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships) raised when speaking on what contributes to the ‘imposter syndrome’. Professor Cobie Rudd addressed a full house at the Australasian College of Health Service Management: WA Women in Leadership Masterclass at Royal Perth Hospital on 11 February 2019.
With a presentation entitled “Using your voice, getting past the barriers to achieve gender equality in the workplace”, Professor Rudd flagged the chronic under-representation of women in science and the importance of boosting female leaders in the health and medical research workforce. “The industry is powered by women yet the disparity remains apparent” she said.
According to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency’s 2017-2018 gender scorecard, the healthcare and social assistance industry has a gender pay gap of 16.1% despite female GPs now taking 51% of the cohort.
As Athena SWAN Lead at ECU, Professor Rudd spoke to building diverse leadership capacity that is representative of patient populations. Role models, sponsorship, being courageous and organisational change were several key themes explored in driving gender equality particularly at the senior levels.
In stressing that gender equality is everyone’s business Professor Rudd noted “Achieving gender equality is not about ‘fixing the women’ – it’s fixing the workplace so it is better for all genders.”
