The Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) held their most recent event in the ‘Women in Leadership’ series on 6 June 2019. Edith Cowan University (ECU) proudly continues to co-sponsor CEDA’s Women in Leadership series with the current event entitled ‘Diversity in the Public Sector’.
This session saw leaders from across the WA Public Sector share personal stories, motivations, strategies and spoke to their commitment to delivering improved circumstances for all in WA. A group of ECU staff members were lucky enough to join the energetic gathering for what was a powerful address by leaders from across industry.
ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships), Professor Cobie Rudd, opened the event which was Chaired by the first female Public Sector Commissioner, Sharyn O’Neill who shared her plans to lead the reform and change across the public sector where it is deeply needed. Commissioner O’Neill spoke to the notion that diversity is not a ‘nice to have’ idea, but a must have, and how women in leadership positions should be a core competitive leaver for change.
The event also included presentations from Michelle Andrews, Director General, WA Department of Communities on the role of leadership, and their part in championing the strategy for diversity, and Mike Rowe, Director General, WA Department of Water and Environmental Regulation on the relatively new department and its current journey on diversity.
Following the presentations, a moderated discussion was held with questions to further gather insight on how these leaders inspire action and lead from the front with regard to diversity in the workplace. Topics discussed related to how businesses in WA are supporting diversity through; tips and experiences for running a campaign for respectful workplace behaviours, examples of ‘diversity beyond gender’ through respectful relationships and conversations, and initiatives such as flexible working arrangements.
