The School of Education in partnership with the organisers, the Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA) and Penrhos College held the inaugural Maths Empowering Girls Day on 2 July 2019 at Mount Lawley Campus, ECU.

Maths Empowering Girls, hosted by the School of Education, saw 240 Year 9 school girls from across 18 different secondary schools (with 70 more students on the waiting list) participate in a day of enjoyable mathematical based workshops and activities.

The event, chaired by Paula McMahon, MAWA Executive Officer, allowed the 240 school girls to hear keynote presentations from two highly skilled women, with over 20 years experience in the field of sciences; Leading Seaman Cristy Hazelman  from the Royal Australian Navy, and Shelley Kalms, Chief Digital Officer, Woodside. In addition, inspirational women in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences) from across a range of industries were invited to interact with the students across a range of activities, aiming to share with the girls their experiences of how maths can empowered your career journey.

One of the highlights of the day was the greatly anticipated activity entitled ‘Speed Dating’. This activity involved small groups of girls placed in a conversational group with one STEMM professional for a short amount of time, before rotating many times to allow a quick introduction to the life and career of their ‘Speed Dater’. This smaller group setting allowed the girls to ask one on one questions of their hosts in an informal and friendly setting.

ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships), Professor Cobie Rudd, and ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Caroline Finch AO participated in the event as a ‘Speed Daters’ and both felt it was a privilege to be invited to participate.

The event was closed with an address from Professor Dawn Penney, School of Education ECU, noting what a successful event the day had been.
