2019 Edith Cowan Athena SWAN Advancement Scheme

Three high achieving ECU staff members have been recognised with an Edith Cowan Athena SWAN Advancement Scheme honour in the fourth round of the highly sought-after Awards.

The Edith Cowan Athena SWAN Advancement Scheme aims to celebrate gender diversity in the spirit of the Athena SWAN Charter principles. The Scheme supports staff who have parental and/ or caring responsibilities as they progress in their careers and/or recognising gender equality champions who make a difference to the status quo at work, every day.

A large congregation of ECU staff members celebrated the award winners at a ceremony which took place on 20 August, co-hosted by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve Chapman and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships), Professor Cobie Rudd.

The 2019 Edith Cowan Athena SWAN Advancement Scheme winners were:

Professional Development/Travel Subsidy

  • Dr Jalleh Sharafizad, School of Business and Law
  • In recognition of her achievements and sustained resilience, ECU is supporting Dr Sharafizad’s career advancement through professional development and networking opportunities.

Kick-Start Science Prize

  • Dr Pauline Zaenker, School of Medical and Health Sciences
  • ECU recognises Dr Zaenker’s achievements as an emerging research leader, and her commitment to greater gender diversity and the advancement of women in STEMM.

Achievement Recognition

  • Mrs Michelle Austin, School of Science
  • As a champion for gender equality, ECU recognises Mrs Austin’s leadership in redressing gender inequities in the spirit of the principles of the Athena SWAN Charter.

Professor Rudd said that “the Edith Cowan Athena SWAN Advancement Scheme Review Panel were extremely impressed with the high quality of the award nominations. This number of nominations and the high standard of their content, demonstrates the level of talent and commitment that ECU staff members have to improving diversity and achieving gender parity at ECU.”
