The Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) has successfully held Women in Leadership events since 2010. Over the last seven years, CEDA has held more than 100 events across Australia seeking to stimulate discussion about women in leadership. Over 250 presentations have been delivered at these events where over 18,000 people attended. ECU has been a co-sponsor for the Women in Leadership series for three consecutive years.
On 8 August 2019, the most recent event in the series was entitled ‘Champions of diversity and inclusion’. This session saw leaders from across industries and sectors discuss their views on developing and supporting a truly diverse and inclusive workforce.
One of the distinguished leaders invited to present at this event was Andrew Hadley, Chief Executive Officer, P&N Bank, whose presentation featured key topics on organisations looking beyond the data, conducting a deep and thorough analysis of issues within their organisations, and gaining a better engagement from staff with the process. The event also included a presentation from Marie Bourgoin, General Manager - Newman Operations, BHP on overcoming unconscious bias and cultural stereotypes for a more inclusive workplace. Marie spoke of the initiatives being championed within her organisation both nationally and internationally. In addition, Anjie Brook, Chief Executive Officer, Western Australian Aboriginal Leadership Institute (WAALI), spoke of the social and economic benefits to be derived from a diverse workforce. WAALI is an independent, not-for-profit organisation based in Perth, with a vision of inspiring and supporting Aboriginal people to take up leadership opportunities to strengthen their families and communities.
ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships), Professor Cobie Rudd, closed the event which saw presenters discuss the differences between equity and equality, the present situation and future changes within the different sectors, including those in the resources sector where traditionally there is a male-dominated culture, and conversations around the bold declarations for diversity and inclusion currently being made by organisations.
