As a lifetime educator, Bette Allison had a long history with ECU’s antecedent colleges.  A 1949 Claremont graduate, Ms Allison later returned to lecture at Graylands Teachers College in Physical and Health Education for 10 years and then at Churchlands Teachers College where she was a senior lecturer from 1971-1986.

Ms Allison was a trailblazer in the development of netball in Western Australia, and was a successful coach at state, national, and international levels.

Ms Allison was able to complete an undergraduate degree, as well as go overseas as a Fulbright Scholar, through scholarships.  As testament to this, Ms Allison left a bequest to ECU to create a scholarship to provide financial support to women studying Exercise Science.

The scholarship, which is valued at $3,600 per student, will have a significant impact on all recipients’ higher education experiences by relieving some of the financial challenges faced by our students.

For Sydney, the Bette Allison Memorial Scholarship removed some financial pressure for both herself and her mother which means Sydney will have more time to focus on her studies.  Sydney is a keen ice-hockey player who is making a name for herself internationally. Sydney’s ambitions include becoming a member of the Australian Olympic Ice Hockey team, and then ultimately a strength and conditioning coach.  “This scholarship will mean that I will be able to save up my money towards ice hockey and travelling with my ice hockey team, which will further my ability to reach my goal”, said Sydney.

A range of scholarships and prizes are offered at ECU to reward excellence and support students facing financial difficulties to complete their studies. To find out more visit our Scholarships web page.

If you would like to support students to reach their goals, please contact the Office of Advancement to discuss a gift now or in your Will at development@ecu.ecu.au.
