Occupational Safety and Health Major

This major is designed to provide students with an introduction to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) profession and equip them with the knowledge and skills to function effectively in the health and safety industry. Students undertaking this major should select a second major in Environmental Management, Health Promotion, Addiction Studies or Nutrition.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply discipline knowledge to a range of theoretical and practical occupational health and Safety (OHS)/ workplace health and safety (WHS) situations.
  2. Communicate disciplinary knowledge and values in professional and public contexts.
  3. Demonstrate autonomy, accountability and judgement for own learning and professional practice.
  4. Think creatively to anticipate challenges and generate OHS/WHS specific solutions/responses.
  5. Think critically to analyse, interpret and conceptualise complex OHS/WHS problems.
  6. Use digital technologies and literacies to access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from multiple sources.

Membership

Students can apply for membership with Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. Graduates are eligible for membership with Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. Graduates of K97 will be eligible to apply for our graduate level of membership Grad IOSH. They will then be required to undertake a period of Initial Professional Development which will require students to provide evidence of their practice skills in a skills development portfolio (IPD), at the end of this period there will be a professional review interview. After successful completion of this IPD process students will then be eligible for the chartered membership of IOSH (CMIOSH).

Students can apply for membership with Australian Institute of Health and Safety (AIHS). Full time students can join as a Student member or on graduation apply for Transitional Membership

Students can apply for membership with Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH). Students can either join as a Student member or an Associate Member.
