The making of a musical

Each year, ECU students combine their creative talents to stage the mid-year musical, the centrepiece of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts' (WAAPA's) program.

In 2019, Strictly Ballroom The Musical was a sellout at The Regal Theatre over seven dates.

While musical theatre students are in the spotlight on the night, behind the scenes more than 80 students are involved in the production – designing and building sets, costumes, props, scenery, lighting and sound.

Music students in the orchestra provided the soundtrack, including Time after Time; Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps; and Love is in the Air.

Photographer Stephen Heath, Kathy Wheatley and Jon Green documented the production, rehearsals and the final result on opening night.
