  • Environmental Monitoring with WiSPr, the Wireless Smart Probe

A wireless sensor the size of a postage stamp that can recognise the specific chewing sound of termites is the latest innovation to feature in the video series, Research@ECU.

Engineering researcher Associate Professor Adam Osseiran has developed environmental monitoring and protection devices such as wireless integrated sensor networks to detect several species of pests.

The latest video focuses on WiSPR – an electronic device that can detect termites before an infestation occurs, reducing the need for large applications of pesticides.

The device has been successfully used for more than a year on hundreds of buildings in Western Australia.

The WiSPR device is just one example of how researchers at Edith Cowan University are working to tackle real world problems with innovative approaches.
