Two of ECU’s high-profile academics have been named inaugural Ambassadors for Children and Young People for their commitment to supporting the next generation.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Equity and Indigenous) and Head of Kurongkurl Katitjin, Professor Colleen Hayward AM, and Professor of Child and Adolescent Health Donna Cross were announced as Ambassadors by Commissioner for Children and Young People Michelle Scott.

The pair joined other well-known Western Australians including Dr Fiona Stanley, former West Coast Eagle David Wirrapanda and Rio Tinto Chief Executive Dr Sam Walsh AO.

Ms Scott said the Ambassadors will work with her organisation over the next two years to encourage others in the community to consider what more they can do to support children and young people and their families.

“The appointment of Ambassadors recognises and supports the work they already do to turn the spotlight on the needs of children and young people across the State,” Ms Scott said.

“The commitment of these individuals demonstrates the philosophy for which I have strongly advocated since being appointed as Commissioner – that the health and wellbeing of our children and young people is everybody’s responsibility, and we all have a role to play.”

The appointment of Professor Hayward and Professor Cross as Ambassadors reinforces ECU’s commitment to improving the lives of young people in the community through education and research.

The research of Professor Hayward and her colleagues at Kurongkurl Katitjin, among other topics, seeks to understand and provide solutions to Indigenous education issues such as numeracy and literacy standards and learning with conductive hearing loss.

Professor Donna Cross was the founding director of the Child Health Promotion Research Centre (CHPRC), established in 2004. The CHPRC research focuses on promoting the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the areas of mental health, obesity, drug use and injury prevention.
