Centre for Research in Early Childhood

The Centre for Research in Early Childhood (CREC) aims to add to the quality of early childhood experiences for all children and their families, at a time of rapid change in policy and practice both nationally and internationally.

Partnership and collaboration is central to our research. As a multi-disciplinary team, we engage with families, the community and formal care and education settings, as well as industry and our teacher education students to explore key issues in early childhood.

The outcomes of our research are practical and immediate, used to inform policy and practice in early childhood, in teacher education courses and in the early childhood profession. We also evaluate the implementation and impact of specific early childhood programs. Our research also helps to make links between new early childhood frameworks and new legislation.

Currently we are conducting research into:

  • evaluation of the National Year of Reading;
  • evaluation of early literacy programs;
  • focused intervention in early literacy development;
  • implementing the Early Learning Framework;
  • leadership in early childhood;
  • literacy in culturally and linguistically diverse communities;
  • supporting literacy in remote Aboriginal communities; and
  • using technology to actively engage students.
