ECU, in collaboration with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, is offering a postgraduate research scholarship to a highly motivated student to undertake spatial analysis of effort, catch and catch rate from four statewide surveys of boat-based recreational fishing. The successful candidate will develop spatial estimates that incorporate the uncertainty associated with location dependent sample sizes, compare estimates among years, and develop methods for producing reliable small area estimates suitable for resource assessment and fisheries management of small-scale fisheries. The scholarship is available to undertake research towards a PhD degree at ECU from the beginning of 2018. The scholarship will have an annual tax-exempt stipend of $28,420 over three years. The scholarship include tuition fee sponsorship and Overseas Student Health Cover for International recipients.

Special exemption from the above requirements may be granted by the Associate Dean (Research) of the relevant School where an adequate case has been made by a potential supervisor.

The successful candidate will have a background in statistical analysis. Competency in statistical computing packages such as R is required. Prior knowledge of spatial statistical techniques or survey design for estimation of population data, and experience in fisheries science, or resource management more generally would be an advantage but are not essential.
The successful applicant will also be able to apply for additional funding through the School’s postgraduate funding scheme. The candidates will have the opportunity to work closely with the management agency (Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development).
