Fashion

The Fashion major promotes a creative and flexible approach to garment. The program examines ideas of clothing and the body through exploration of materiality, wearability, function, deconstruction, context and form.

The Fashion major at ECU has been developed from a creative and philosophical position aligned with contemporary art practise while still incorporating aspects of more traditional fashion and textiles education.

We aim for our graduates to be equipped to work as independent creative designers while at the same time operating within the wider fashion industry.

The course challenges students to enquire and visually research ideas in a way that is aligned to contemporary art methodologies. Alongside developing conceptual and formal understanding of cloth and garment, students investigate and locate their ideas through drawing, collage, digital image, film/video and performance.

Throughout the course students are encouraged to develop their own approaches to set and self-directed projects that are contextualised through researching contemporary and historical approaches to garment, the body and the cultural space that these occupy.

In the final year of the course students develop a range of professional skills that support and frame the self-directed fashion collection. A professional portfolio, photographic collaboration, planning and organisation of a graduate exhibition and parade of their collections ready the graduate for an informed professional design practise on leaving the Fashion course at Edith Cowan University.
