Co-founded by artist Paul Uhlmann and writer Marcella Polain, fold is a research arm of CVAR and aims to create hybrid expressions of word and image through artists' books - the imprint of which is fold editions. The ongoing fascination of this research is to investigate, through discrete projects, the space where word may be understood to create images and where images give rise to words. Within the means of production, hot-metal letterpress is explored, often in combination with contemporary digital print techniques. However, the typewriter, handwriting and print processes from the rubber stamp to woodblock and etching are also employed. Both researchers are staff members and have co-written a unit called VIS2545 Artists Books: Materiality of Word and Image which actively works through these concerns.
