Thursday, 18 May 2017

Presenters: Tania Visosevic and Amanda Myers

Title: Video Essay: Assignment of the Future

Biography: Tania Visosevic is a film and video lecturer for the School of Arts and Humanities, where she combines her research in new media platforms with educating students in understanding the nature and experience of the moving image.

Amanda Myers is an academic librarian for School of Arts and Humanities / WAAPA, and is interested in information literacies, eLearning and non-book collections for performance, teaching and research.

Abstract: Film and video lecturers are qualified subject matter experts, however many still use traditional teaching methods. To be relevant and engaging, contemporary student teaching and learning will need to be delivered using e-learning methods, supported by online and social media platforms. An example of this is the emergence of the video essay as a teaching and learning format. This presentation educates film lecturers about harnessing the video essay as a pedagogical tool. It will argue that the video essay takes advantage of the existing production skills of students and combines it with critical enquiry. Furthermore, the presentation will explore the video essay as a multimodal form of communication that works in conjunction with media literacy undertakings.
