Presenter: Professor Lelia Green

Title: ECU, the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child, and the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child Draft Statement on the Rights of the Child in a Digital Environment.

Biography: Lelia Green is Professor of Communications at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia, and has served on the International Advisory Panel of the “EU Kids Online” project and as a Management Committee Observer of the European Commission-funded “Individuals, Societies, Cultures and Health Cost Action IS1410: The Digital Literacy and Multimodal Practice of Young Children (0-5).  She led the editorial team which has recently completed the 325,000-word Routledge Companion to Digital Media and Children (to be published November 2020) and is the prospective Node Leader for ECU’s participation in the forthcoming ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child.

Abstract: This talk will update CREATEC members as to the progress made in establishing the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child in which ECU is a partner.  ARC funding of $34.9 million was allocated to this centre in September 2019, pending contract approvals.  We hope that those contracts will be in place by November 2020 and that the Centre will be up and running from then on with a funded life until at least 2027.  This presentation will also discuss the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child’s draft statement on the draft statement on the Rights of the Child in a Digital Environment and will outline some of the issues canvassed in that statement.
