International Group for Landscape and Language

The International Centre for Landscape and Language (ICLL) gives prominence to, and brings together, the significant expertise at ECU combined with national and international collaborative partners.

The priority for the Centre is to promote research, teaching, scholarship, publishing, field trips and creative activity in all aspects of the interrelationship between landscape and language. The latter embodies all communicative forms, verbal and non-verbal.

The ICLL publishes the e-journal Landscapes as well as many monograph publications. It organises symposia, colloquia and conferences on the theme of landscape, such as the 2004 international conference On the Beach. Another major conference under consideration is “Landscapes of the Swan-Avon Rivers: the literary and pictorial record of its uses and misuses.”. A significant innovation of the Centre was the Writing in Landscapes Down Under (WILD) courses, which provide two field-based study units especially suitable for international students during the mid-year break. The WILD courses are currently under re-development.

In recent years, the ICLL has hosted many visiting international scholars, including Chinese MA students whose ACC-funded research projects have been supervised by the Centre.

The operations of the Centre are supported by the ICLL Advisory Panel and the Board of Management of CREATEC.
