< ALTtag > was an on-line journal produced by the photomedia program and the Space, Place, Body and Technology group for the former Centre for Research, Information Technology and Communications in the previous School of Communications and Multimedia (SC&M).

< ALTtag > was published bi-annually, with the first (summer) edition presenting projects undertaken and completed by graduate and postgraduate photomedia students and staff from the SC&M.

The second (winter) edition included work drawn from the wider visual culture community.

The 'alt' tag in html is the code that usually contains the name of a picture or other html element that is displayed.

The aim was to foster, disseminate and promote exciting and challenging visual explorations and expressions of contemporary culture, particularly work produced and presented within a thematic, narrative or academic context.

Visual culture, driven by changes in technology and convergence of what were once considered disparate media (photography, film, video, sound, graphics, and text), is being re-defined and reinvented, creating new and exciting possibilities and challenges.

We wanted to provide a space where ongoing dialogue between students, practitioners and a broad critical readership of this emerging visual culture can develop.
