Final year Finance students present their research to Australian Shareholder Association representatives Len Roy and Lloyd Phillips
The School of Business and Law has a valuable relationship with the Australian Shareholders’ Association and our Finance students recently benefitted from a visit by two of its representatives Len Roy and Lloyd Phillips.
Mr Roy is WA Company Monitoring Chair, a volunteer position which involves engaging with company directors and attending AGMs in the interests of retail shareholders. Mr Phillips is part of the company monitoring team.
Our guest speakers used Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (Fortescue), a WA based ASX listed company, to provide insights into reviewing a company’s financial performance and assessing its suitability for portfolio investment.
Students had undertaken their own research in class and presented their insights on recent developments in Fortescue’s strategic initiatives, changes in the management team and how ESG (environmental, social and governance) initiatives would enhance value for an investor. They then provided their recommendation to either Buy, Sell or Hold Fortescue shares.
Mr Roy and Mr Phillips found the students’ research in-depth, insightful and relevant.
The session was organised by Lecturer Gary Marchioro and Dr Jaime Yong provided a demonstration of how ECU Finance students use Refinitiv, a database which enables them to conduct real-time market research, in preparation to be industry-ready graduates.
Associate Dean of Accounting and Finance, Simone Scagnelli, valued the experience the visitors were able to share with the students and hopes the School will continue to engage with the Association.
