Law students help put detectives to the test

ECU Law students are making a valuable contribution to detective training in WA and in doing so, gaining very valuable employment experience.

In a collaboration between the School of Business and Law and WA Police’s detective training school, Law students act as prosecutors and defendant counsel in mock trials that are the culmination of detective training.

The trainee detectives are required to present the results of their investigations on a case study in these mock trials, designed to replicate a real life court.

Students are presented with lengthy prosecution briefs less than 24 hours before they are due to appear in ‘court’; often requiring them to work through the night to be ready.

Already students have participated in three mock trails in 2022 – in April, June and July.

The entire project is an overwhelming success to date. Students have said that they would do it all over again in a heartbeat. According to Law Lecturer Ken Yin ‘the blood, sweat toil and tears of true to life advocacy were experienced in a way that cannot be replicated in the classroom’.

The Law Discipline is grateful to WA Police for demonstrating such faith in our students.  There will be two further rounds in 2022 and the School is more eager than ever to continue its involvement with the project.
