Earlier this week, ECU representatives Elena Lucassen and Evelyn Dalton gathered with 600 other community members to show their support for equal access to justice for all Western Australians.
Law Access, a not-for profit organisation assisting some of the most vulnerable people in WA, organised a 4.4 kilometre walk to celebrate the pro bono work of the legal profession of Western Australia and to raise funds that assist vulnerable individuals and community organisations seeking legal assistance in WA.
With the help of all contributors and a record number of walkers, the initiative was able to raise over $150 000, which will assist to increase community access to justice and legal services – a massive effort from students and professionals alike.
Elena, president of the Edith Cowan Student Law Society said ‘fundraisers such as these are so important, not only because of vital funds that need to be raised to assist the most vulnerable members of our community, but also in raising awareness of all the wonderful work Law Access is doing and in showcasing the opportunities that are there for students, law schools, and the profession’.
Evelyn, ECU student, believes that the Walk for Justice is a great reminder that legal representation often comes with privilege, and that awareness and generous donations will help to close the gap.
‘I think that legal representation should be equally accessible to everyone, and many people definitely take advantage of their financial situation when seeking legal aid. It is great to see Law Access supporting and achieving great outcomes for those with a financial disadvantage when it comes to finding legal representation’.
