This August, 150 Project Management students, staff from the School of Business and Law (SBL), Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) members from the Emerging Project Professionals (EPP) special interest group and AIPM WA chapter councillors came together to attend a panel discussion jointly organised by the AIPM and ECU’s SBL.
The panel comprised leaders in the project management profession who took the time to share their opinions on how to start a project management career. The event was a rare opportunity to listen to current views about the expectations required of project managers, the experience that project managers need to have and the different industries employing project managers today.
Students took the opportunity to meet others also starting in their career and gain ideas on where and how they as individuals could take their first steps in the right direction to becoming a project manager.
Panel members included highly skilled and experienced practitioners who have served as project and program managers and directors on public and private sector projects in the construction, business change and technology/ICT areas. There was a robust question and answer session at the end of the panel discussion which carried over into networking over refreshments.
The EPP is a community within the AIPM who look to network and improve their skills in project management. It provides opportunities for entry level and emerging project professionals within the many industries to use project management disciplines for networking and skill development and are focused on relationship building and growth.
ECU Project Management students felt that the event was informative and the networking opportunity invaluable.
