As students moved into the final weeks of the semester with exams and assignments, School of Business and Law hosted their annual Mid-Semester Celebration for all ECU students and staff to kick back and have some fun.

On the 16th October, the event saw a sunny clear sky as a great foundation to a fun filled day out on the lawn in front of Building 1 and 2. Students and staff where invited to sit back in one of the deck chairs enjoying a free BBQ lunch, while watching the soccer competition or getting a memorable photo from the photo booth.

The soccer competition, which was a new element for this year, saw six teams of 5-6 players each made up from both ECU students and staff – all eager to win the gold medals and honour of the SBL Soccer Championship! The event was fortunate to host a professional soccer umpire, which also happens to be a PhD student in Sport Management at ECU, which made the competition a total success.

The six teams where The Challengers, FAMJET, Business Ballers, Operation Strike, Legal Eagles and MKT6302 Magic. After the challenging knock out games, the two teams to compete for the honourable gold win in the final was MKT6302 Magic and FAMJET. Both of the teams gave the audience a good show of team spirit and winning will, ending in MKT6302 taking the win over FAMJET!

The final scores (in winning order):

  1. MKT6302 Magic
  2. FAMJET
  3. Business Ballers
  4. The challengers
  5. Legal Eagles
  6. Operation Strike

As well as winning first price, the winning MKT6302 Magic team’s Michael Solate, a HDR student, also took home the umpire’s pick of ‘Player of the Day’ trophy!

The day was concluded with yummy ECU cupcakes and other interactive activities such as giant lawn games, of course the photo booth, and arts and crafts.

Our thanks to the umpire, Alexander Best, as well as our volunteer staff and students, for making the Mid-Semester Celebration 2019 a great one!
