More than 25 international students are working part-time or casually in hospitality after completing ‘Come study and work in Western Australia’ training.

The School of Business and Law’s Tourism and Hospitality staff initiated, developed and ran the 2022 training program after receiving a StudyPerth $50,000 Innovation grant.

The program aimed to help returning international hospitality students from a number of educational institutions find work whilst also helping to meet industry’s demand for staff.

Through partnerships with the Australian Hotels Association Western Australia (AHAWA) and eight of the major hotel groups, students were able to obtain their Responsible Service of Alcohol, COVID-19 Hygiene Training and StudyPerth job-readiness program ProsPER before arriving in Perth.

Once in Perth, students were partnered with a major hotel and completed two-weeks of on-the-job training in either Front Office, Housekeeping or Food and Beverage.

The program was a resounding success and in early December, CEO of StudyPerth Derryn Belford, presented certificates to program graduates.

At the presentation ceremony, ECU Alumni and training provider Siva Moonesawmy, who is Assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the Joondalup Resort, shared he was pleased to be part of the program and be able to give back to ECU, as he indicated the university was so welcoming and supportive of him as an international student.

Student Sammy (Shui) Yau, who is from Hong Kong, completed the program and is working as a Food and Beverage Attendant at the Duxton Hotel. He was grateful for the opportunity to complete some of initial training online and then be ready for on-the-job training once he landed in Perth. Sammy indicated that the training allowed him to apply some of the concepts he is learning in his Master of International Hospitality Management in a real-world context.

According to Dr Joanna Pearce, this program would not have been possible without the wonderful hotel partners – Duxton, Hilton, IHG Hotels and Resorts, Joondalup Resort, Marriott International and TFE Hotels.
