Work Integrated Learning sets Lucy up for success

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is one of the most valuable opportunities available to students in the School of Business and Law.

WIL involves students undertaking a work placement as part of their coursework, enabling them to apply their academic learning in a professional environment.

It’s also an opportunity to build networks and in some instances – as Lucy Shirley can attest – a WIL placement can lead to employment and an exciting career.

Lucy undertook a WIL placement as part of her Bachelor of Commerce.

She said that when she first met with the WIL Coordinators Arron Jackson and Jo Lucas she was unsure about the type of career she was interested in.

She said that she knew the placement was an amazing opportunity and didn’t want to waste it in an area that ultimately she didn’t enjoy.

After talking with Lucy, Arron suggested that HR might offer a good career path as it combined the areas of business she most enjoyed, involved social interaction and was people-centred.

Lucy was interested and Jo and Arron arranged a placement with the InterContinental Hotel’s Human Resources department.

According to Lucy, this was a wonderful experience.  ‘The team I worked with provided the most incredible and highly enabling placement experience, and I gained invaluable insights into the world of Human Resources and the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) organisation.’

’At the end of my placement I felt sorry to be leaving as I had built great bonds with the organisation and the people I was working with, and felt inspired by the values and ethos on which they establish their work.

‘A couple of weeks after finishing I was extremely excited to be contacted about a potential employment opportunity and ended up being offered a position as Human Resources Coordinator at the InterContinental Perth.’

‘I am loving the work and the people I am working with.’

‘I am so grateful to Arron and Jo for inspiring me to explore new options and for guiding me to an exciting career path’.

Arron said ‘experiencing a professional workplace and living in the shoes of a business professional during a WIL placement can be transformational for students. There is no better way to discover what a career or job role truly entails. I am so happy that Lucy is flourishing in her new role and in the excellent work culture of IHG Perth’.
