Dr Abel Duarte Alonso

Dr Abel Duarte Alonso is a Honorary Senior Lecturer in Hospitality, in the School of Business and Law.

Background

Abel Alonso joined Liverpool John Moore University's Business School in the UK, after holding academic appointments in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

Abel grew up in a family business that operated in two countries at different points in time, and later worked at Swiss hotels located in all four speaking regions of the country, including in Arosa, Davos, Interlaken, Lausanne, Lucerne, Minusio, Samedan, and Zermatt.

Abel's research interests are primarily on micro and small enterprises operating in various industries. At the start of his doctoral studies, for instance, he conducted a pilot study among micro and small New Zealand wineries, and subsequently researched the consumer side of the winery visitation.

After his doctoral studies, Abel has continued his research endeavours, primarily field research, in various regions of New Zealand, in Australia, Italy, Latin America, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Awards and recognition

  • 2012 - Dean's Honour Roll for Top Researchers in the Faculty of Business and Law.
  • 2011 - Dean's Honour Roll for Top Researchers in the Faculty of Business and Law.

Research areas and interests

  • Micro, small and medium enterprises, with special focus on food/wine production, tourism and hospitality; community development.
