Better Beginnings Family Literacy program: Birth - Three

The State Library of Western Australia has presented every new born baby in WA (2004-2015) with a literacy 'toolkit' as part of an early literacy program. This project is a follow-up to Phase 3 and investigates how Better Beginnings 0-3 is being sustained and how Better Beginnings has influenced parent and wider family literacy practices and book sharing practices as the child matures. This is the next stage of the ongoing longitudinal evaluation conducted since 2004. In this study the original cohort will be contacted to assess program impact over time and a new cohort in the same original districts will be invited to participate.

The aim of this research is to build on previous findings and to:

  1. Identify the ongoing impact and sustainability of the Birth - 3 years program on the participants and stakeholders involved in the longitudinal evaluation of Better Beginnings.
  2. Evaluate the implementation and outcomes of the Birth - 3 years program on a new cohort of participants within the established longitudinal evaluation communities.
